Controversy Surrounding US Olympic Cyclist’s Social Media Comments
Members of the US Olympic Cycling Team have sparked outrage following social media posts that appeared to celebrate the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Chelsea Wolf, who was an alternate for the US women’s BMX team during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has come under scrutiny. Wolf, who identifies as a transgender woman, has made headlines in the past for controversial remarks.
Recently, he made inflammatory statements targeting Kirk and his supporters on his Instagram story, which were only available for a limited time before disappearing.
In one of his posts, Wolf shared an image alongside a caption featuring the children’s character Dora, saying, “We did that!” This remark drew significant backlash.
Another post was clearer in its hostility. Wolf declared, “Being a Nazi is completely optional. He didn’t have to choose that path, but now he’s dead. The world won’t be any better off because of it.”
In a separate message, Wolf expressed, “I hate it because the Nazis want us to die,” indicating a strong emotional response to Kirk’s death.
His posts were numerous and reflected a broader context of negativity. He characterized Kirk not merely as an opposing conservative but as a promoter of harmful ideologies, mentioning “racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, xenophobia, anti-immigrant hatred,” and claimed Kirk was detrimental to marginalized groups.
Wolf also stated, “If you feel compelled to mourn for his family, that’s your decision. But don’t criticize others for choosing not to. Refusing to lament those who endanger your community doesn’t make you ‘better’.”
This isn’t the first time Wolf has attracted criticism. He previously commented that winning the Olympics would allow him to burn the American flag during the medal ceremony, which he viewed as a way to “hurt trans kids.”
