Madrid Hosts Candlelight Tribute for Charlie Kirk

Dozens Gather to Honor Charlie Kirk in Madrid

In Madrid, Spain, a large group of mourners came together in front of the US embassy to remember Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator and activist, who was tragically killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, aimed to promote conservative values among young Americans. He was known for his online shows and frequent speaking engagements designed to engage the public. His recent trip to Utah was part of a broader series of campus appearances titled the “American Comeback Tour,” encouraging students to interact with him and discuss his views.

Tragically, Kirk was shot in the neck while talking to a student. Authorities have since identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the shooter, and he is now in custody. The police believe Kirk was specifically targeted due to his conservative beliefs, as noted by Utah Governor Spencer Cox.

Beginning Wednesday, people began paying tribute to Kirk in Madrid, leaving behind a photo and candles inscribed with “Stay at peace” at the American embassy. A more organized gathering occurred on Thursday with numerous Spaniards, many donning red “Make America Great” hats, bringing flowers and candles to celebrate the life of Kirk.

A local news source mentioned that the commemoration was organized by “young patriots and associated groups,” featuring remarks from local conservative leaders, including Vox Madrid President José Antonio Fúster.

One of the event’s promotional posters stated, “This homage is a cry against political violence and a call to stand up against it fearlessly.”

A conservative youth group, Revuelta, also played a significant role at the event and recorded a vigil throughout the night. Attendees shared their observations, holding candles and flowers with messages like “Let’s Pray for Kirk” and “Generation Beacon.”

Revuelta representatives said Kirk had a keen interest in politics in the Spanish-speaking world, inviting their group to a Turning Point USA event. They expressed, “Today’s tribute to Charlie Kirk is particularly meaningful because we were fortunate to attend a Turning Point event in Florida. His charisma and eloquence inspired countless young people to engage in politics.”

They continued, lamenting that Kirk’s assassination symbolizes an unwillingness to tolerate differing viewpoints. “From now on, we know we must advocate despite the challenges we face,” they said.

Fúster, the Vox president, commended Kirk and addressed the media, denouncing radical Marxists for inciting violence across Ibero-America. His remarks also drew parallels to other political figures like Fernando Villavicencio and Miguel Uribe, who both faced violence in their campaigns.

Villavicencio was a conservative candidate in Ecuador, assassinated in 2023, while Uribe was killed during his campaign in Colombia. Kirk’s death brought forth reflections on the dangers faced by political advocates, especially those with conservative values.

Fúster emphasized Kirk’s role in fostering discourse at universities, stating that a lack of conversation leads to negative outcomes. His assassination was a grim reminder of this reality.

Many political leaders from the Spanish-speaking community expressed their condolences, describing Kirk as “one of us.” Argentine President Javier Milei characterized the incident as a consequence of rampant leftist violence in the region, lamenting the loss of someone he regarded as an incredible human being.
