Ethan Hawke Reflects on River Phoenix’s Legacy

Ethan Hawke recently opened up about his late friend, River Phoenix, at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. The actor, now 54, shared insights during a discussion while working on a project related to Phoenix, who tragically died in 1993 at just 23.

The two starred in a science fiction film together in 1985, which was a significant experience for Hawke. Reflecting on their time in the industry, he acknowledged the enormous pressures faced by performers and mentioned Phoenix’s ongoing struggles throughout his career.

“He found success faster than I did,” Hawke noted, highlighting the intensity of Phoenix’s early acclaim. He explained that Phoenix received considerable recognition yet often felt detached from his own artistic control, leading to feelings of artificiality in his work.

Hawke remarked, “People are trying to profit from you,” emphasizing the dangers of self-awareness in such a high-pressure environment. Nonetheless, he credited Phoenix for encouraging him to create his finest work with director Gus Van Sant.

Hawke reminisced about Phoenix’s role in “My Own Private Idaho,” where he played a gay hustler with narcolepsy, alongside Keanu Reeves. The part was risky, especially for a young actor at that time, but Phoenix excelled, even winning the prestigious Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for his performance.

Tragically, Phoenix passed away from a drug overdose in 1993 outside the Viper Room. In a memoir, musician Bob Forest described the chaotic atmosphere leading up to that night, recounting Phoenix’s struggles with addiction.

On that fateful Halloween, Phoenix was at the club with his brother Joaquin, sister Rain, and others, including actor Johnny Depp. As the evening went on, the mood shifted significantly. Forest noted that Phoenix seemed out of sorts, and moments later, someone called for emergency assistance. Despite being rushed to Cedars Sinai Hospital, it became evident that Phoenix had died when Forest arrived and saw his girlfriend, Samantha Mattis, in distress.

The news hit hard, leading to a poignant exchange between Forest and Depp, who expressed his sadness upon hearing what had happened.
