Clemson is certainly in an intriguing position this season.
The Tigers started the 2025 campaign with lofty aspirations following their trip to the 2024 College Football Playoffs. With returning starting quarterback Cade Klubnik and a top-notch recruitment class, they were ranked fourth in the Associated Press preseason poll. Everything seemed set for head coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson to have a successful season.
Fast forward to mid-September, and the Tigers find themselves at 1-2. The possibility of making the College Football Playoffs again feels daunting.
They kicked off their season with a loss to powerhouse LSU, which some might excuse. However, their performance against Troy was concerning; they trailed 16-3 at halftime. Although they managed to pull off a 27-16 win, one has to wonder why they got into that predicament in the first place. Was it some kind of Trojan horse effect?
Things didn’t improve when they faced Georgia Tech. Once again, the Tigers found themselves in an early hole, falling behind 13-0. They clawed back, getting within striking distance at 13-7 by halftime. Clemson briefly took the lead at 14-13, but Georgia Tech responded with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. In a last-ditch effort, the Tigers had to scramble to tie the game within three minutes.
But then came the devastating moment. Georgia Tech’s kicker Aidan Birr nailed a 55-yard field goal, sealing a heartbreaking defeat for Clemson.
Now, the question looms: “What’s next for Dabo Swinney?”
It’s difficult to picture him stepping away from Clemson. Yet, as losses accumulate and the team’s once-sterling reputation begins to fade, one has to wonder how long the university will tolerate this downturn. In a world of big-money college athletics, there might be concerns that the program can’t keep up.
It’s certainly something worth contemplating as the season unfolds. Keep this in mind the next time Clemson faces a setback.
