A Family’s Journey: Traveling the World on a Budget
A couple currently enjoying a “gap year” with their six-year-old daughter, Nira, asserts that this global adventure is actually more affordable than staying put in the UK.
Haley and Lewis Trow recently shared their unique experience, explaining that they traded their typical life for time with their daughter, creating lasting memories along the way. Leaving behind Cheshire in mid-July was no small feat—they left jobs, homes, and family, opting instead for a life of exploration and, let’s be honest, a bit of budgeting panic.
However, through their travels across Europe, Haley, 37, and Lewis, 45, have discovered something surprising: they’re actually saving money while on the road. They set a monthly budget between £2,000 and £3,000 (around $2,300-$3,500)—a stark contrast to the £4,000-5,000 (about $4,600-5,800) they were spending at home. It seems traveling might be more feasible than they had thought.
Initially, maintaining a budget wasn’t the main motivation behind their trip. Instead, it stemmed from a long vacation in Australia in 2022, which sparked their desire for more travel. It’s funny how one trip can lead to an entire lifestyle change.
Haley, previously in recruitment, noted, “We wanted more time, more adventures, and more freedom for our daughter.” She insists that taking this leap was one of the best decisions they’ve made, although it hasn’t been without its hurdles.
They were well aware that their unconventional route would raise eyebrows among friends and family, yet they felt it was the right choice for their family. Nira’s school even supported their decision, making the transition smoother than expected. She’s now engaged in online learning that aligns with the UK curriculum while temporarily enrolling in a multicultural school in Bali.
Their journey kicked off with a trip to Disneyland in Paris, celebrating Nira’s birthday, which was followed by four weeks in Italy. Picture those beautiful birthday memories—the excitement must have been palpable.
Haley reflected on those moments, saying, “At age 6, Nira still wants to spend every second with us, and I know that it won’t last forever.” Now, they’ve settled in Bali until November, embracing the enchanting sights and experiences together.
Haley expresses awe for the incredible places they’ve visited. Experiencing the world through Nira’s eyes has made it even more magical. “Compared to juggling school runs and late-night emails… I’ll take the mess of my travels any day,” she says. It’s a sentiment many parents can relate to—sometimes, the chaos of adventure is far more appealing than the routine of daily life.
