Lexus Continues to Back LGBT Activist Group Even After Its Parent Company Disagrees

Lexus, the luxury car marque, appears to maintain its support for The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), an LGBT advocacy group, even though its parent company, Toyota, scaled back its involvement last year by choosing not to sponsor similar initiatives.

Last year, Toyota announced it would cease funding LGBT events in favor of focusing on its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The company also decided to stop participating in the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI) survey, as reported in October 2024. Despite this pause in support from Toyota, Lexus still holds a position as a gold-level corporate partner on the HRC’s website.

Requests for comment from a Lexus representative went unanswered by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Major corporations such as Target, Nike, United Airlines, Amazon, and Apple are also partners of HRC. According to the HRC website, all listed companies “exemplify a high level of commitment to equality.”

Prior to last year’s events, the HRC hosted its National Dinner in Washington, DC. At this event, attendees had the chance to enter a lottery for a new 2025 Lexus RZ 300e.

Stefan Padfield, executive director of the National Center’s Free Enterprise Project, commented that decision-makers have a duty to base their choices on thorough understanding, considering possible impacts on the bottom line. He noted mixed responses from Lexus and Toyota regarding their support for HRC, indicating potential issues within the decision-making process.

He pointed out that efforts to counteract the perceived agenda of DEI proponents are ongoing, but it’s essential for stakeholders to know whether a company supports specific views, such as those relating to children’s gender identity. He implied that if HRC does not clarify its position, it raises concerns about accountability.

Since its inception in 2002, the HRC has published CEI surveys ranking companies based on their LGBTQ-related policies and practices. In the past, the group has also urged companies to provide coverage for gender transition medications and surgeries.

In early 2024, Toyota achieved a perfect score on the HRC’s CEI survey, marking the 16th consecutive year of such recognition for the company. Additionally, it ranked first in the Rainbow Push Automotive Project 2024 Diversity Scorecard, scoring 90 in the HRC’s survey for 2025.

Requests for comment from a Toyota spokesperson remained unanswered as well.

In recent times, Lexus has actively supported various LGBTQ events, including the International Gay Polo Tournament and a panel event in partnership with Austin FC celebrating the local LGBTQ community.

Despite some large firms pulling back on their support for pride events and DEI initiatives, largely due to political pressures during the Trump administration, many experts believe these companies may just be adjusting their strategies to navigate the current landscape.

Padfield noted that it seems numerous companies are trying to evade the impact of the Trump administration’s crackdown while simultaneously signaling their allegiance to leftist ideals without making significant changes.
