Pete Alonso's game-ending home run leads Mets to victory in extra innings against Rangers

Mets Secure Win with Walk-Off Homer

Amid growing tension, the Mets were simply in need of a victory on Sunday. No matter the length of the game—be it nine, ten, or even fifteen innings—it was all about getting that win.

Pete Alonso stepped up, delivering a crucial three-run homer in the tenth inning, leading the Mets to a 5-2 victory against the Rangers. This win ended the Rangers’ impressive eight-game winning streak, the longest for the team in seven years.

With Francisco Lindor initiating the inning for the second time, Juan Soto was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Alonso, who then sent the ball soaring over the right-field fence.

Pitcher Nolan McLean showcased his skills with six scoreless innings, allowing only five hits while striking out six batters and walking two. His earned run average improved to 1.19.

The Mets had their chances but squandered opportunities in two separate innings, loading the bases courtesy of singles from Starling Marte and walks to Francisco Alvarez and Lindor, only to see Soto retire at the end of it.

McLean was challenged by Jock Pederson and Lowdy Terresz, as they both notched singles, but Adris Garcia grounded into a double play that broke up the momentum.

It was an interesting match, with McLean hitting Josh Jung, and another Texas player caught looking at strike three to cap off the inning.

In the fifth inning, McLean found his way out of a jam by hitting Wyatt Langford and striking out his third batter in that frame. Cody Freeman was effective, hitting two doubles, while Josh Smith walked, but McLean came through with another strikeout.

Soto managed to bring in the game’s first run with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning, igniting some hope for the Mets.

Alvarez began a rally with a double to right field, reaching third on Lindor’s groundout before narrowly being thrown out at home by Teres.

The Rangers answered back, tying the game at two in the sixth. A double play from Jung brought the inning to a close.

Brandon Nimmo, however, capped the sixth with a homer, elevating the Mets to a 2-0 lead. It was his 23rd of the season, notably his first since August 29th.

Despite Brooks Raley allowing two runners in the seventh, Pederson’s timely single drove both in, leveling the score.

Osna’s leadoff single sparked another rally, yet frustrations continued for the Mets. They failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities, particularly with runners in position as Alvarez reached base again.

Edwin Diaz faced pressure in the ninth, allowing the Rangers to advance to third before Smith hit a line drive. Lindor then contributed with a double, keeping the game tense.
