DC Comics Writer Faces Backlash Following Comments on Charlie Kirk’s Death

Transgender DC Comics writer Gretchen Velkermartin has stated that he feels “no regrets” regarding the remarks he made about the recently murdered conservative activist, Charlie Kirk.

Immediately after Kirk’s assassination, DC Comics decided to cancel Felker-Martin’s Red Hood comic series, which had just hit newsstands. The cancellation followed Felker-Martin’s comments that seemed to celebrate Kirk’s death.

In the days since his dismissal, Felker-Martin has downplayed the situation, mentioning that at least he apologized for his initial remarks.

“I really have no regrets about what I said,” Felker-Martin remarked about Kirk. “His murder didn’t hit me the way it probably should have. He was a very unpleasant person, and it seems like everyone online is reveling in this.” He elaborated, stating that Kirk had, over the years, “spouted prejudices” and wished death upon others. “This is a guy I’ve seen on television and at conventions promoting harmful views,” he added.

However, it’s important to note that Felker-Martin’s statements have been challenged. Kirk never advocated for violence against marginalized groups.

Following his controversial comments posted soon after Kirk’s death, Felker-Martin expressed sentiments like, “Thinking and praying about your Nazi bitch,” and seemed to revel in the idea of violence, saying he hoped Kirk’s death was “fine.”

Despite having only released the initial issues, DC Comics decided to cancel the series altogether.

In their official statement, DC Comics emphasized their commitment to valuing creators and the community while acknowledging personal expressions of opinions.

Nonetheless, Felker-Martin’s history of posting radical statements on social media has raised eyebrows. He has previously made inflammatory remarks about figures like Osama bin Laden and has been critical of Israel while praising Hamas. His actions on platforms such as Bluesky have led to account suspensions due to calls for violence.
