Hannah Einbinder Discusses Future of “Hacks”

Hannah Einbinder, known for her role in “Hacks,” shared some significant news about the show’s future at the 77th Emmy Awards. The 30-year-old actress announced that the acclaimed dark comedy will wrap up after its upcoming fifth season.

While on the red carpet, she mentioned, “I think it feels different. We’re starting next week. It’s really bittersweet to know that it was last season.” She continued, “But I think it’s correct, you know? It’s good to do something as many times as you need to. It’s not always a welcome thing; it can be tough to process those emotions.”

“Hacks” debuted on HBO in 2021, and the fifth season was confirmed in May—just two days before the fourth season was available for streaming.

The show’s creators, Jen Statsky, Lucia Anielo, and Paul W. Downs, aren’t confirming if Season 5 will be the concluding chapter. They’ve hinted that the story could only stretch for five seasons. “We know where the series ends, but things have changed along the way—some elements were added, others removed,” Statsky remarked earlier this year.

Einbinder plays Ava Daniels, a budding comedy writer under the mentorship of the seasoned Deborah Vance, portrayed by Jean Smart. Notably, “Hacks” has secured 62 Emmy nominations over four seasons, taking home 10 awards.

Jean Smart, 74, celebrated her fourth Emmy win for her role during the ceremony. Despite suffering a knee injury earlier this summer, she delivered an inspiring acceptance speech. “One of the best things about winning something like this is being able to publicly thank the people you work with,” she said, expressing gratitude towards her cast and crew.

Einbinder had her own moment in the spotlight, having won her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I was really committed to my personal story, but I actually thought it was cooler to lose. But this is cool too! This is punk rock!”

With a heartfelt conclusion, she added thanks to Smart, the cast and crew, and even made a poignant social statement before wrapping up her speech.
