77th Primetime Emmy Awards’ “In Memoriam” Segment

During the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, the program took a solemn pause for its annual “In Memoriam” segment, remembering television icons who passed away over the past year.

This year, Vince Gill’s live performance of “High High in That Mountain,” alongside country artist Rainey Wilson, set a poignant tone as images and clips of the deceased were showcased. The tribute unfolded at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, touching hearts in the audience.

Among those honored, Malcolm Jamal Warner, known from “The Cosby Show,” was notably remembered. He left us this year at the age of 54.

Phylicia Rashad, who played the beloved matriarch Clair Huxtable, introduced the segment, using the moment to say a heartfelt goodbye to her on-screen son. “He was the cherished teenager of our series,” she remarked. “Like all my friends and colleagues who have transitioned this year, Malcolm forever remains in our hearts.”

According to Rashad, the evening’s tradition was not just about recognizing their incredible talents but also celebrating how they enriched our lives, bringing joy and positivity that will endure.

Numerous additional tributes followed for figures like Ozzy Osbourne, Food Network star Anne Burrell, and actress Michelle Trachtenberg. Osbourne passed away on July 22, 1976, due to multiple health issues, including cardiac arrest. Meanwhile, Burrell, known for her vibrant hosting on the Food Network, died on June 17 at 55.

Trachtenberg’s untimely death on February 26 at age 39 was reported as related to complications from diabetes. Also honored was the legendary Maggie Smith, who died at 89 on September 27, 2024. While recognized widely for her film roles, Smith’s TV legacy, including her memorable portrayal of Violet Crawley in “Downton Abbey,” left a lasting impact.

The montage also included tributes to Loretta Swit, renowned for her role in “M*A*S*H,” and George Wendt, celebrated for portraying Norm Peterson on “Cheers.” Wendt passed away in May 2023, and his character became iconic in the comedy world, earning him six Emmy nominations throughout the series.

Other notable faces celebrating included David Lynch, Quincy Jones, and Ronan Anderson.

However, not everyone was included in this year’s segment. Viewers took to social media to share their disappointment. Polly Holliday, best known for her Emmy-winning role as “Flow” on “Alice,” was notably missing, leading fans to express their frustrations online. One viewer quipped about the omissions on X, stating, “Well, Emmy can kiss my grits!”

Hulk Hogan was also left out. Having passed away from a heart attack on July 24 at the age of 71, Hogan’s absence raised eyebrows among fans, prompting questions about why certain legends were overlooked while others were recognized.

The response on social media ranged from confusion to anger, as some fans wondered why Hogan, a prominent figure in professional wrestling, wasn’t included when others, like Osbourne, were.
