Reactions to Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Prompt Firings

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s tragic assassination, employers nationwide have begun to take action against workers who made light of the situation. It’s quite shocking, really; many have faced termination.

At least eight organizations, including well-known companies, have let go of employees following the death of Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

For instance, Nasdaq terminated an employee for making inappropriate comments on social media related to the shooting. The company emphasized its strict stance against any form of violence and commentary that appears to condone it.

Details have surfaced about various companies responding to the aftermath of Kirk’s death. The Massachusetts-based Center for Biomedical Research, a collaboration between Harvard and MIT, fired an employee for making what was described as “deeply offensive” remarks regarding the incident on their personal social media account.

Additional Company Responses

Perkins Coie, a Seattle law firm, followed suit by firing an attorney who criticized Kirk on social media, asserting that such comments do not reflect their values. They made a point to state that the employee’s views do not align with the firm’s expectations.

Office Depot also found itself in the spotlight when it terminated an employee at a Michigan location after staff were seen in a viral video refusing to print posters for a vigil in honor of Kirk. The company initiated an internal review immediately following this incident.

The Joe Barrow Foundation, a nonprofit established by NFL quarterback Joe Burrow, moved quickly to cut ties with an advisory committee member who made inappropriate comments after the shooting.

MSNBC’s political analyst Matthew Dowd was also dismissed due to his controversial remarks during the network’s coverage of the assassination. He suggested that Kirk fostered a divisive environment that could lead to such violence.

Furthermore, the Carolina Panthers made headlines by firing an employee who questioned public reactions to Kirk’s assassination on social media. They issued a statement clarifying that the individual’s views do not represent the organization’s stance.

Finally, the West Ada School District dismissed an employee who allegedly posted a video celebrating Kirk’s death, further highlighting the variety of reactions across different sectors in light of this tragic event.
