Dolphins Coach Not Deterred by Banner Criticism
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel expressed that he wasn’t particularly shocked by the banner flown by a plane above Hard Rock Stadium, which called for his firing ahead of the team’s 33-27 defeat to the Patriots.
During a post-game conference, McDaniel, facing scrutiny during the Dolphins’ 0-2 start, was asked about the aerial message that read “Fire (Dolphin General Manager Chris) Greer. Fire McDaniel.”
“I was coaching and calling plays,” McDaniel remarked. “We didn’t focus on what the fans were doing. They simply want a winning team. So, if we win, I don’t think it’s personal. They want success and, well, I do too.”
Amid the ongoing struggles, Miami’s defense faltered, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The attack has not been smooth, to say the least.
Meanwhile, standout wide receiver Tyreek Hill broke a 30-yard catch drought that had lasted since the previous season’s opener when he completed a 47-yard catch early in the third quarter. It was a welcome moment amid the chaos.
Following a disappointing 33-8 loss to the Colts on September 7, Tagovailoa ended up committing three turnovers and the Dolphins managed a mere 211 yards of offense in that game.
There are also whispers of trade rumors surrounding Hill, who has had only four receptions thus far.
Questions about McDaniel’s job have become a hot topic, especially since a GoFundMe campaign started by fans raised $1,898 to fund the banner.
Tagovailoa, for his part, didn’t seem affected by the boos from the crowd. “It’s part of the game,” he commented. “Fans invest their hard-earned money to watch us. We realize it’s all part of the experience. You have your highs and lows, and we need to remain unified and stable as players.”
The Dolphins will next face off against the Bills, who are currently 2-0, on Thursday.
