Randi Weingarten to Host Virtual Event on New Book

Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is set to hold a virtual event on Tuesday to discuss her latest book, which explores educators confronting what she describes as a “fascist regime.”

The event is slated to begin at 4 PM and is organized by Emerge, a liberal nonprofit focused on supporting Democratic women in politics. It will spotlight Weingarten’s book, titled “Why Fascists Fear Teachers,” alongside Emerge’s President, A’shanti F. Gholar.

Inquiries made to the American Federation of Teachers regarding the event’s status due to the recent assassination of figure Charlie Kirk have gone unanswered so far. Interestingly, promotional materials for the event remain visible on Emerge’s website.

Published on Tuesday, Weingarten’s book articulates her perspective on battling fascist ideology, discussing its implications for democracy, opportunity, and public education as we currently understand them.

Following Kirk’s assassination, Donald Trump Jr. expressed concerns about political violence not being reciprocal.

The book preview notes that attacks on educational institutions and teachers are often seen in fascist regimes. According to Weingarten, many historically significant leaders banned books and manipulated school curricula to consolidate their power. She argues that educators play a vital role in cultivating an informed populace capable of critical thinking, which threats like fascism inherently fear.

There’s been some chatter among media analysts and conservatives regarding claims that some left-leaning figures have labeled Kirk a “fascist.”

Turning Point USA founder Kirk, who co-established the organization in 2018, was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University. Authorities identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the suspect after he reportedly confessed the incident to his father.

Robinson is under special custody as a mental health evaluation is underway, with officials also conducting interviews with his partner, who is transitioning to a woman.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox recently shared that the suspect arrived with notes that included anti-fascist sentiments, indicating a clear motive related to these beliefs.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children. His funeral is planned for September 21st in Arizona, with notable attendees expected.

Weingarten has publicly condemned political violence following these events, emphasizing that such actions are never justified regardless of one’s beliefs. She expressed her condolences to Kirk’s family and attendees of that tragic event, hoping it would spark important discussions about the role of social media in disseminating harmful ideas.

In her book and recent speeches, Weingarten warns against the threats posed by fascism, suggesting that elections significantly influence the direction of rights and freedoms in society.

She reflects on historical insights that indicate violence often follows electoral victories rather than precedes them, indicating a pattern in how fascism gains traction.
