Quarterback Jayden Daniels Diagnosed with Knee Sprain
Reports indicate that Jayden Daniels, the quarterback for the Washington Commanders, has been diagnosed with a knee sprain. This injury raises concerns about his participation in the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Daniels sustained the injury last Thursday during the fourth quarter of a 27-18 defeat to the Green Bay Packers. He was tackled while attempting a one-yard scramble, which resulted in a noticeable limp. Although he finished the game, he was evaluated by the team and underwent an MRI on Friday.
This injury adds to the challenges faced by the Commanders, especially following their second consecutive loss at Lambeau Field. The team is already dealing with the season-ending Achilles injury of veteran running back Austin Ekeler, leaving them without their starting quarterback just ahead of the match against the Raiders.
Daniels started the season as a third-string quarterback. His absence could impact many fantasy football managers, as he had scored 39.8 points in the first two weeks of the season, completing 43 of 72 passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to 85 rushing yards. It’s worth noting that he only managed 17 rushing yards against the Packers, and a knee injury could further limit his mobility.
In Daniels’ absence, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota will step in for his first action of the season. While there are veteran options available on the waiver wire—with many being rostered for under 1% in fantasy leagues—it’s likely that Daniels’ managers already have alternative backup plans. Suitable options could include players like Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers.
Both Daniels and Ekeler are optimistic this week, hoping that rookie Jacoley Crosskey Merritt will receive more opportunities in the backfield against the Raiders. Merritt had just four carries in the last game, but there may be an increase in his involvement. Veteran tight end Zach Ertz should continue to be a key target, as he has scored touchdowns in both games this season.
