AI chatbots cause confusion following Kirk's assassination

Aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Sparks AI Misinformation

Last Wednesday’s assassination of Charlie Kirk has stirred a great deal of speculation and confusion, leading many to dive into the myriad theories surrounding the event. Searching for clarity, some individuals experienced more frustration than insight, possibly due to the influence of various AI chatbots attempting to provide information.

A report from CBS News revealed several troubling inaccuracies linked to AI systems like Xai’s Grok, Perplexity’s AI, and Google’s AI, particularly during the chaotic days following the tragedy.

One striking incident involved a tweet from a prominent account, which has 2.3 million followers, sharing an altered, AI-enhanced image of the suspect. The enhancements unnaturally smoothed the suspect’s features and significantly distorted their clothing. Although a community note flagged the post, emphasizing that it was not a reliable method for identifying suspects, it circulated widely, even being reposted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Utah.

Additionally, Grok misreported details regarding an FBI reward, calling it a “hoax.” CBS News pointed out that the status of Kirk’s condition was reported inconsistently, even after it became official that he had died.

S. Shyam Sundar, a professor at Pennsylvania State University and director of the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence, explained to CBS News that AI chatbots generate responses based on probabilities, which can easily lead to misinformation during critical events.

With the recent episode of “South Park” spotlighting the absurdities of AI, it’s clear that these technologies are not always the most reliable when it comes to real-time reporting.

In one instance, Grok gave an intentionally misleading answer involving 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, suggesting he opposed the MAGA movement when, in reality, he was a registered Republican who had contributed to Trump in 2024. This contradiction surfaced just an hour after Grok initially suggested otherwise.

Moreover, hours after Kirk’s death had been confirmed, reports labeled the incident as a “hypothetical scenario.” Google’s AI even mistakenly identified Hunter Kozak as someone the FBI was interested in right before Kirk was killed.

While artificial intelligence can be useful for collating information, it is crucial for users to approach these chatbots with caution, especially regarding real-time events where accuracy is paramount.
