Shea LaBeouf Reflects on Reconciliation with John Voight
In a recent interview, Shea LaBeouf discussed his reconciliation with John Voight, his co-star in “Megalopolis.” The actor shared insights about their relationship during the creation of a film that explores the difficulties surrounding Francis Ford Coppola’s much-anticipated but ultimately disappointing project.
LaBeouf, now 39, revealed that he and Voight have been reconnecting since they had distanced themselves over political disagreements in the past. He described the challenges of reconciling their differing views: “I was in the midst of taking the ninth step in this program. Voight’s politics and my politics are so different; I had to compensate for that,” he mentioned.
Both actors had previously collaborated on notable projects, such as “Holes” in 2003 and “Transformers” in 2007. LaBeouf reminisced about Voight’s mentorship early in his career, particularly before the political climate shifted significantly in 2016 with Donald Trump’s presidential run.
Reflecting on the tensions, LaBeouf recalled a heated phone fight that nearly led to physical confrontation. “I told him I was going to come to his house for a fistfight,” he said, noting that years went by without communication between them.
Voight, a long-time conservative activist, has been a staunch supporter of Trump. Earlier this year, he was named a “special ambassador” for Hollywood by Trump, alongside other notable figures. This designation aims to rejuvenate the film industry.
In contrast, LaBeouf had made headlines in 2017 with his anti-Trump art project titled “He Will Not Us,” which encouraged protests against the incoming president. The exhibition faced significant backlash and was dismantled shortly after its launch in both New York and Albuquerque.
Despite their rocky past, LaBeouf expressed a newfound appreciation for Voight, acknowledging the kindness in their relationship. “He was like my mentor at a young age,” he shared, hinting at the complexity of their connection and the growth both have experienced over the years.
Representatives for Voight did not provide any comments regarding this latest discussion.
