Colts’ New Owner Advocates for Game Headsets
Carlie Irsay-Gordon, the new owner and CEO of the Colts, has made an interesting suggestion: if you’re investing millions in a coach or general manager, it might be wise to wear a headset during the games.
Those who have attended a Colts game might have noticed her on the sidelines, headset on, busy with call sheets and taking notes.
After the passing of her father, Jim Irsay, Irsay-Gordon and her sisters, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson, stepped into ownership roles in May.
“A lot of that depends on how we operate and use the headset,” she mentioned, indicating that it could be beneficial for coaches and executives who are often making costly decisions. “It helps you potentially make cheaper mistakes,” she added on the Colts website.
Her presence has been noticeable during games, such as when Colts kicker Spencer Shrader secured a 29-28 victory over the Denver Broncos, marking the team’s first 2-0 start since 2009.
Former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones played a key role in that game, leading a crucial drive.
Irsay-Gordon’s involvement has drawn attention on broadcast channels, and honestly, it caught me off guard at first, too.
“When I hired Chuck Pagano back in 2012, it struck me that I needed to learn more from them,” she reflected. “I needed to discern if people were being genuine about their knowledge.” She emphasized that the complexities of managing a football team compelled her to dive deeper into understanding the game.
While some speculate she’s there to oversee everything, Irsay-Gordon clarified her aim: it’s about gaining insights to make necessary adjustments. “I can point out when a route was run incorrectly,” she explained. “However, I’ve learned it’s not always on the player; sometimes it’s about the call that was made.” This understanding, she believes, is vital for identifying areas needing improvement.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen has echoed these sentiments, noting that Irsay-Gordon has been actively engaged with both the offensive and defensive teams since her February 2023 appointment. “She understands football,” he said. “From day one, she’s been practical and I believe she will excel in her role.”
The Colts, currently 2-0 in the season, are set to face the Tennessee Titans, who are 0-2, this upcoming Sunday.
