Jay Reno Celebrates Life with Wife Mavis Amid Challenges

Jay Reno, during an event hosted by the Feminist Majority Foundation, shared insights about his marriage with Mavis, who is battling advanced dementia. He poignantly noted that even with her condition, Mavis still embodies the spirit that has always defined her.

The 75-year-old former late-night host and his 79-year-old wife, a noted women’s rights activist, have been married since 1980. They’ve chosen not to have children and in a recent interview, Jay spoke candidly about his role as her primary caregiver.

“It’s just the two of us,” he remarked, expressing his gratitude for their long partnership. “I’ve enjoyed taking care of her. It’s actually fun.” He dismisses the idea that caring for a partner with dementia is daunting, saying that she doesn’t suffer in the way some might think.

Jay also clarified the nature of Mavis’s condition, explaining, “It’s not like cancer or a tumor. There’s a lot of misunderstanding about Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Earlier this year, he filed for guardianship to help manage Mavis’s affairs due to her significant cognitive challenges.

Having been married for over 43 years, he fondly reflected on their relationship, emphasizing that he always managed their finances to ensure Mavis had the resources she needed. A judge recognized his commitment to her care in granting him conservatorship.

In the same vein, Leno acknowledged how fulfilling it is to support Mavis, likening his role to being her rock. He recalled a humorous moment related to an old episode of “Hawaii 5-O,” which stirred Mavis’s spirited advocacy, showcasing her vibrant personality despite her struggles.

Despite touring as a comedian, Leno makes it a priority to return home to Mavis every night. He expressed, “I just like being with her, cooking dinner, and enjoying the simple things we did together before.”

Reflecting on the challenges of caregiving, he acknowledged the physical tasks involved, yet he maintains a positive outlook on their life together. “I think it truly defines what love is about—being there for one another,” he shared.

The couple first met in the 1970s at The Comedy Store, and Mavis has often recounted that she was immediately drawn to Jay. Over the years, her feminist spirit and commitment to charitable work have always impressed him, and he attributes his own inspiration to her character.

In a recent heartfelt moment at the 16th Global Women’s Rights Award Gala, Jay paid tribute to Mavis, noting that they’ve shared an easy and joyful marriage. “I enjoy her company,” he said. “She’s the most independent woman I know, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of her legacy.”
