OpenAI Enhances Teen Safety Features for ChatGPT
OpenAI recently introduced new measures aimed at making ChatGPT safer for teenagers. The company announced this update on Tuesday.
With the revamped teenage protection features, parents can now link their ChatGPT accounts to their teens’ accounts. This allows them to control how ChatGPT interacts with their children, ensuring the responses are suitable for different age groups. Parents can also disable features like memory and chat history as they see fit. According to the company, they prioritize safety over teenage privacy, recognizing the significant responsibility that comes with this advanced technology.
Interestingly, parents will receive notifications when the system identifies a teenager using the platform. This feature, introduced after consulting experts, reflects OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing protective measures.
Additionally, in situations where a user under 18 shows signs of suicidal thoughts, the system aims to reach out to their parents. If that’s not feasible, it may contact authorities to prevent immediate harm, as detailed by CEO Sam Altman.
Parents will also have access to new control settings, which include options to limit ChatGPT’s usage altogether for their teens. Furthermore, OpenAI is developing technology to help predict the ages of its users.
Altman mentioned that, when in doubt, users should assume they are under 18 to maintain a safer experience. There are instances where identification might be requested, a compromise some might see as intrusive, yet OpenAI believes it’s a worthwhile exchange for increased safety.
Lastly, Altman acknowledged the challenges in balancing the protection of teenagers with the respect for privacy. He emphasized that these decisions are complex, but after discussions with experts, OpenAI believes this approach is the most effective while remaining transparent about their intentions.
