NFL clarifies reasons for Tom Brady's presence in the Raiders' coaches' box

Tom Brady’s Unique Role in the NFL

Tom Brady, who holds a minority stake in the Raiders, has been spotted sitting in the coaching box during games. Recently, the NFL clarified his position and what it allows him to do within the organization.

Despite a tough 20-9 loss at home against the Chargers on Monday night, Brady was seen wearing a headset in the booth. The NFL issued a statement emphasizing, “There is no policy preventing owners from being in coaches’ booths or wearing headsets.” Brady was there in his capacity as a limited partner, according to the league.

However, there are rules in place. Anyone in the booth must adhere to a policy that disallows the use of personal electronic devices, like Microsoft Surface tablets, intended for sideline viewing.

Interestingly, while he can observe games closely, Brady is still barred from attending team practices or production meetings in person. He can, though, attend these meetings remotely and has the opportunity to interview players if needed.

This week provided a bit of a unique moment for Brady, allowing him to witness the Raiders firsthand as they played on “Monday Night Football.” After their nail-biting win over the Chiefs the week prior, the Raiders had hoped for another strong showing.

Brady’s broadcasting commitments sometimes clash with his ownership opportunities, but he seemed to juggle both roles quite well. ESPN reported that he had a setup in the booth including a laptop, while sports analyst Peter Schrager mentioned interactions between Brady and Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly during the broadcast.

Brady became a minority owner of the Raiders last October, receiving 5% of the group’s 10% stake in the Las Vegas team. This move was approved by the NFL and coincided with his debut season as a broadcaster for Fox.

Some restrictions were previously placed on his participation in broadcast sessions due to his ownership role, particularly last season. However, those have been relaxed this year, although many elements still require remote operations. Regardless, he remains unable to attend any practices.

As Brady prepares for his next broadcast in Chicago, the team is looking to secure its first victory against Dallas. It’s always interesting to see how he balances both sides of the football world.
