The FBI director, Kash Patel, took a strong stance against Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) during a hearing on Tuesday, delivering several harsh criticisms aimed at him and other lawmakers frequently targeted by President Trump.
When Schiff inquired about Patel’s handling of Epstein-related files, the response veered into a personal attack. Patel asserted that his actions were meant to safeguard against the “weaponization of intelligence,” implying Schiff’s involvement.
“On January 6th, we demonstrated that you’re a liar regarding Russiagate. You’re arguably the biggest scammer sitting in the United States Senate. You’re a disgrace to this institution,” Patel declared.
He further remarked, “It’s not surprising that you continue to lie from your position, putting on shows to fundraise for your facade. At best, you’re politically irrelevant,” he claimed.
Patel then shifted the focus to issues of child exploitation, suggesting that the previous administration had failed in addressing those concerns adequately. This intense exchange took place during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where Patel was testifying.
Throughout Patel’s remarks, Schiff attempted to respond, but it was not clear if his microphone was functioning properly. Requests for comments from Schiff’s office went unanswered.
Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) expressed frustration over the unfolding situation, as ranking member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) urged him to regain control of the hearing. Grassley then raised his voice, “Let’s both keep quiet.”
The tense dialogue began when Schiff addressed a security matter concerning Ghislaine Maxwell’s relocation after discussing it with Patel, asking if the FBI had insights about the move.
“The Bureau of Prisons made that decision entirely independently of our conversation. It’s completely unrelated to any comments made,” Schiff questioned, pushing for clarity on the appropriateness of such a move.
Patel, taking a strong stance, appeared to position himself against those viewed as adversaries of Trump.
Trump has frequently criticized Schiff and other lawmakers involved in the investigation stemming from his first term, alleging improprieties in their actions.
This confrontation marked a second heated moment that day, with Patel also clashing with Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who questioned his future in his position, indicating, “Given your leadership failures, I doubt you’ll remain for long. This might be your last oversight hearing.”
