Utah County attorney officially files charges against the person believed to be Charlie Kirk's attacker

Charges Filed in Charlie Kirk Assassination Case

On Tuesday, the Utah County Attorney officially charged Tyler Robinson, 22, in connection with the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

At a press conference, Attorney Jeff Gray described Kirk’s murder as “an American tragedy.” Robinson faces serious charges, including aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injuries, among others.

“Charlie Kirk was murdered while participating in the exchange of free ideas, a fundamental right of our Democratic Republic,” Gray stated, emphasizing the importance of truth and understanding.

Gray noted that under Utah law, aggravated murder can lead to sentences ranging from 25 years to life in prison, possibly with the death penalty. He confirmed his intent to seek the death penalty against Robinson.

According to Gray, the suspect “deliberately or intentionally caused Kirk’s death,” endangering others in the process.

Additional details revealed that the discharge of a firearm leading to serious injuries could carry a five-year prison sentence. Gray added that the state is considering “aggravating factors” related to Robinson’s actions, citing that he targeted Kirk for his political expression and was aware that children were present at the scene.

In terms of specific charges, Robinson also faces:

  • One count of obstruction of justice, classified as a second-degree felony, for hiding firearms used in the shooting.
  • Another second-degree felony for disposing of clothing worn during the incident.
  • One count of tampering, a third-degree felony, for instructing his roommate to delete incriminating texts.
  • One count of witness tampering, a third-degree felony, by telling his roommate to remain silent if questioned by police.
  • Robinson’s actions were underpinned by Kirk’s political views, which he allegedly considered during the murder.

Robinson, a resident of Washington, Utah, was arrested on suspicion of crimes related to Kirk’s murder at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk was fatally shot while addressing a gathering of primarily university students.

Officials have indicated that Robinson will have his first court appearance on Tuesday at 3 PM local time.

Additionally, forensic evidence links Robinson to the crime; DNA found on towels wrapped around the firearm confirmed his identity. This firearm was reportedly discovered abandoned in a wooded area near the university, along with personal belongings of the shooter.

Reports suggest that Robinson lived with a roommate who identifies as transgender. The FBI indicated that this roommate has been fully cooperative during the investigation and is not facing charges regarding Kirk’s assassination.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has affirmed that the roommate’s insights could be valuable for understanding Robinson’s motives, although those motives remain unclear.
