Clemson University Dismisses Staff for Praising Charlie Kirk's Assassination Following Backlash

Clemson University Dismisses Employees Over Controversial Social Media Posts

Clemson University has let go of two more staff members following criticism over their inaction against colleagues who celebrated political violence after the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

The university stated on Monday, “After a thorough investigation into inappropriate social media activity, we have terminated our employees.”

In the statement, it was noted that two faculty members were removed after being asked to leave a classroom setting on Friday as part of an inquiry into their online conduct. The message also emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its campus community.

An urgent meeting among the Clemson University Board of Directors lasted for over three hours, where the decision to dismiss the staff was made, attributed to their offensive social media remarks regarding Kirk’s assassination.

This incident has brought increased scrutiny to the institution. Prior to these dismissals, three employees—Robin Newberry, Joshua Bregie, and Melvin Villaver Jr.—had been flagged for their shocking social media comments by members of the College Republican chapter at Clemson.

Newberry, serving as the Asbestos Program Manager, made a troubling post implying that Kirk was harmful to the Constitution. Another interaction from Bregie discussed Kirk’s stance on societal issues controversially.

Villaver, an assistant professor, also made several provocative posts related to Kirk, suggesting that empathy was misused following his death. His comments about various topics seemed to lack context, further inflaming criticism against him.

Initially, the university had opted not to take decisive action, asserting that comments made were not threats. However, as backlash escalated—including pressure from students, alumni, and political figures—the university reversed its stance.

By Monday, the administration announced the termination of the two additional staff members, asserting that maintaining the core values of the institution was essential, especially when individuals’ actions jeopardize campus safety and hinder the learning environment.

This series of events reflects growing tensions within the university community, highlighting the complexities of navigating political discourse on campus.
