Raffensperger Announces Governor Bid in Georgia

Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, officially declared his candidacy for governor on Wednesday, gaining attention after his refusal to overturn the state’s 2020 election results, which President Trump had urged.

In his two-minute promotional video, Raffensperger aimed to highlight his conservative values, addressing topics important to the GOP base. He discussed issues like education, women’s sports, and parental involvement concerning transgender athletes.

Interestingly, while Trump wasn’t mentioned directly in the ads, Raffensperger seemed to acknowledge the pressures during the 2020 elections without identifying specifics. It’s clear he is strategically navigating his past associations.

“I’m a conservative Republican and am ready to make tough decisions,” he stated in the ad. “I follow the law and the constitution, and I’m always doing the right thing for Georgia.”

Raffensperger joins other notable candidates, including Trump-backed Lt. Col. Burt Jones and state Attorney General Chris Carr, in what is shaping up to be a competitive GOP primary. All three candidates are aiming to succeed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who is facing term limits.

This primary is particularly intriguing given that Jones participated in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results as one of the so-called “fake electors,” though he has not faced any charges related to this issue.

On the Democratic side, several candidates are in the mix, including former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former GOP lieutenant colonel Jeff Duncan, and former state senator Jason Estevez, among others. There’s also speculation that Stacey Abrams might enter the race.

DGA spokesman Kevin Donohoe commented, saying, “The launch of the Brad Raffensperger campaign is bad news for Burt Jones and Chris Carr, adding a new layer of complexity to an already contentious primary.” He went on to emphasize that Raffensperger’s entry intensifies the competition among candidates who are keen to align with Trump’s platform.

The dynamics of the race are likely to shift as these candidates vie for the spotlight, with reports suggesting that Kemp’s seat is viewed as competitive.
