ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman issued an apology on Thursday following backlash for his comments about Tyler Robinson, the suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk, and his transgender partner. Gutman expressed regret on Instagram, specifically condemning the shooting by the Turning Point USA founder.
In his post, he reflected on the contrast between Kirk’s assassination, a person committed to public dialogue, and the unsettling text messages he shared from the Utah County lawyers during a press conference. “I deeply regret that my words didn’t make it clear,” he stated.
During the press conference where Robinson’s murder charges were announced, Gutman referenced a text exchange that revealed sentiments from Robinson toward his transgender roommate. The suspect affectionately referred to the roommate as “my love,” indicating a relationship that seemed heartfelt despite the tragic circumstances. In one message, Robinson said, “I’m still okay with my love, but I’m stuck in Orem for a little longer. To be honest, I wanted to keep this secret until I passed away in my old age. Sorry.”
Gutman remarked on the unexpectedly touching aspects of that relationship, calling it “very moving” and highlighting the emotional depth in the communications between Robinson and his roommate. He noted the “heartbreaking duality” inherent in the situation, juxtaposing Kirk’s murder with the intimate details of Robinson’s relationship.
As the situation unfolded, Gutman’s comments ignited a social media firestorm, leading to calls for him to apologize. In response, he expressed his sorrow not only for his words but also for the pain inflicted on Kirk’s family and those who witnessed the distressing events. “Let’s not doubt. I clearly denounce this horrific crime and the pain it caused Charlie Kirk’s family, those who witnessed it at UVU, and the millions he inspired,” he asserted.
ABC News has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the matter.
