Controversial Student Reaction at Texas State University
A Texas State University student in San Marcos was filmed laughing at the assassination of Charlie Kirk during a campus vigil. This event took place on Monday in remembrance of the founder of the now-murdered Turning Point USA.
“We do not tolerate any behavior that trivializes or promotes violence on our campus,” said a university official. In the video, the student was heard saying, “Charlie Kirk got it on his neck!” while mimicking actions as if he were joking about the incident. Other students in the crowd could also be heard laughing.
Shortly after, the student walked in front of the gathering and made further remarks that were offensive. As he returned to the group, he was seen spitting on the ground and making derogatory comments.
The reactions from bystanders were quite critical, with many expressing disapproval and concern. Comments like, “Oh, buddy! You’ll be expelled, man,” were audible as the crowd reacted to the student’s behavior.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded quickly on social media, stating, “Hey, Texas. This act is unacceptable in our schools. We will expel this student immediately. Mocking assassination results in consequences.” Following this, the university confirmed in a statement that they had identified the student and emphasized that such behavior is contrary to their values.
A fellow student, Hayden Allard, recounted shortly before the incident trying to understand the motivations behind the student’s actions. He mentioned that the student expressed deep disdain for Charlie Kirk, calling him “F Charlie Kirk, all my dead buddies,” implying feelings of anger and hostility.
Another student, Felix Federer, acknowledged that the area, known as “the quads,” is a space designated for free expression but was unsure if that justified the remarks made.
This incident highlights the complexities of freedom of speech on campus and the possible consequences when it veers into mockery of serious matters.
