Meatballs Take Center Stage at Dinner

Ikea has teamed up with designer Gustaf Westman to launch a new holiday collection featuring a 12-piece set designed specifically for serving Swedish meatballs—the iconic dish of the store. This unique collaboration aims to add a whimsical touch to hosting.

The trough platter is approximately 12 inches long and is designed to hold around a dozen meatballs.

Interestingly, despite many chefs often dismissing quirky kitchen tools, this new meatball plate from IKEA seems to be winning over fans.

“I enjoy designing objects that have specific features. It adds a hint of humor and helps people understand them more easily,” Westman remarked.

Social media responses from IKEA shoppers have been lively. Many might not find it strictly necessary, but its charm brings joy. One user joked that it felt like an April Fools’ joke, while another exclaimed, “What is this? I need it!” and another called it “meaningless and perfect.”

Westman embraces the playful side of dishware, noting that meatballs have traditionally had to share space on plates. These new porcelain meatball plates, he believes, make practical sense for the brand.

IKEA has been serving its famous meatballs for 40 years, selling around a billion annually, and has expanded its offerings to include plant-based, chicken, and salmon options.

“In Sweden, meatballs symbolize Christmas, and this plate is my tribute to that tradition,” Westman explained. “The design is straightforward; it allows each meatball to appear as if it’s sitting on its own little throne. While it’s designed for meatballs, it can also be used for various other dishes.”

Creative ideas from fans have surfaced regarding alternative uses for the plate:

  • One user suggested putting a single large asparagus on it since they don’t eat meat.
  • Another thought it would be perfect for serving Bitterballen in the Netherlands.
  • One person mentioned using it for sushi rolls, while another envisioned “Ants on a log.”
  • There were ideas about using the center for sauces, while some simply considered using a regular bowl instead.

IKEA also encourages using the plates for olives, cheeses, fruits, and sweets.

The complete holiday collection will be available in stores starting October 1st and online from October 3rd.
