Emma Raducanu holds back tears while winning at the Korea Open

In a tense match, British tennis player Emma Raducanu navigated through a whirlwind of emotions.

Raducanu managed to overcome tears and weather delays to achieve a straight-set win in the first round of the Korean Open against Jakuri Klinson, finishing with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

This match marked a welcome turnaround for Raducanu, who hadn’t played since her exit from the US Open in the third round last month after facing Elena Ribakina. The match took longer than expected, largely due to several interruptions from the rain.

The 22-year-old had a shaky start, committing six double faults and allowing the first set to reach a tie at three games apiece. It was at this point that cameras captured her wiping away tears.

It’s a bit unclear what caused her tears—whether it stemmed from frustration, pain, or another source. Nonetheless, the tears didn’t prevent her from securing the victory.

“I’m very happy today,” Raducanu reflected post-match. “It wasn’t easy, and I appreciated the patience I needed to display before getting back on the court.”

She continued, “The tough circumstances, the late start, and the lengthy rallies made it challenging, but I’m relieved to have pushed through it. I’m thankful for the support I received from everyone who braved the rain to be here for me.”

Raducanu, seeded eighth in the tournament, hit five aces and won a commendable 67% of her first serves, converting five out of seven break points.

Currently ranked 33rd in the WTA, Raducanu is set to face a new opponent, ranked 39th, in the second round of the Korean Open on Thursday.
