Kuminga’s Future Affects Warriors’ Offseason Moves
Jonathan Kuminga’s choice regarding his future is significantly influencing the Warriors’ offseason strategy. Just a couple of weeks into training camp, one of the team’s notable players, Jimmy Butler, is seeking clarity on the matter.
Butler reached out to the Warriors’ management to discuss a team contract for Kuminga, who is a restricted free agent. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson highlighted this during a recent podcast.
Johnson mentioned that Butler might have asked with a tone of confidence, “What’s happening here? I just want to know what the plan is.” He also noted that Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were looped into the discussions.
Both Butler and Green checked in with Kuminga directly, as reported by ESPN. It appears most of the tension stems from Kuminga’s contract negotiations, which, according to sources, have reached a bit of a stalemate. Kuminga, at 22, is reportedly after a player option, while the Warriors are offering around $75 million for three years without a team option, or $54 million if he takes the option.
Kuminga had an average of 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds over 47 games last season, starting in 10 of those. If the two parties can’t reach an agreement by October 1, he’ll receive a $7.9 million qualifying offer and would become an unrestricted free agent at the season’s end.
The Warriors secured Butler in a trade from the Heat in February, which ended a challenging relationship he had with the Miami management. Following his acquisition, they quickly offered him a two-year extension, but it remains uncertain if a similar deal can be struck with Kuminga.
Butler, reflecting on his transition to the Warriors, remarked, “It’s just basketball for me. I’m all about basketball.” Johnson noted that Butler’s implication was clear: a decision must be made regarding Kuminga, whether to keep him or let him go.
