Fiverr's shift to an 'AI-first' approach results in 250 job cuts

Fiverr, the online freelance marketplace, has revealed plans to significantly downsize its workforce and increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into its operations, as stated by CEO Micha Kaufman in a letter to employees on September 15th.

In this communication, Kaufman informed staff that approximately 250 employees were laid off, representing nearly 30% of the workforce. He described this as a necessary “painful reset” for the company as it shifts toward becoming an “AI-First Company.”

The aim of this reduction is to streamline the platform, making it “faster and faster, with more productive teams and fewer management layers,” according to Kaufman. He emphasized that these layoffs would not negatively impact the freelancers using Fiverr.

“Business at Fiverr will never be affected through this transformation,” Kaufman reassured. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering you and democratizing access to opportunities.”

What is Fiverr?

Founded in 2010 by Kaufman and Shai Wininger, Fiverr started as a platform for users to “buy and sell digital services like physical goods.” Initially, services like graphic design, video editing, and proofreading were offered at a flat rate of $5, though the platform has expanded to include a wide array of services with varying pricing.

Over the past decade, Fiverr has developed into a robust marketplace with 3.5 million active buyers across more than 160 countries and over 700 service categories.

In a recent revenue announcement for the second quarter, the company reported a nearly 15% increase compared to the same period in 2024, largely attributed to a surge in AI-related services.

Fiverr’s Stance on AI Integration

Kaufman’s recent layoff announcement follows an earlier company-wide email from May, in which he warned, “AI is here for your job.” He acknowledged that even his own position was not exempt from the shift, calling it a “wake-up call.” Additionally, in 2024, Fiverr launched a controversial ad campaign suggesting that the distinction between human and AI-generated work is trivial.
