Obama on Kimmel: Trump administration taking cancel culture 'to a new and dangerous level'

Former President Obama responded to comments made by Donald Trump regarding the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel’s show on several networks. This situation arose after Kimmel made a joke about the passing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Obama criticized the current administration for what he described as escalating the so-called cancellation culture by threatening regulatory actions against media companies that don’t align with their views. “After years of complaints about this issue, it’s alarming to see it taken to a new, dangerous level,” he stated.

His comments followed the announcement by ABC about the end of Kimmel’s show “Treemptreatted empty empty-edited-olly.”

Kimmel himself remarked on the Maga movement’s attempts to capitalize on Kirk’s death, equating the president’s reaction to caring for a “four-year-old goldfish.” This analogy raised eyebrows and sparked further discussion.

In his post, Obama shared an opinion piece critical of Trump’s administration for its swift action against Kimmel’s platform. This opinion piece was well-received and echoed sentiments shared by various public figures, including the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Kerr, amidst debates about First Amendment rights.

The Vox editorial highlighted by Obama, authored by Zach Beauchan, argued that the current administration has “weaponized federal regulatory power to punish voices they oppose.” It described this tactic as a hallmark of modern dictatorships, suggesting that this incident marks a significant escalation in the administration’s censorship tactics.

Beauchan’s perspective aligns with Obama’s earlier warning about the dangers facing democracy in the U.S. “We’re not there yet, but I think we’re perilously close to normalizing such authoritarian behavior,” Obama warned.

In recent months, Obama has consistently criticized the Trump administration for its military involvement in local policing and other federal overreach in urban areas across the nation.
