Gavin Newsom criticizes ABC for canceling the Jimmy Kimmel show due to Kirk's remarks

Governor Newsom Criticizes ABC’s Decision on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has spoken out against ABC’s choice to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following controversial comments made by the host regarding the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

In a press conference, Newsom expressed his outrage, labeling the network’s actions as “rotten, despicable, spineless behavior.” He urged people to pay attention to what he sees as coordinated efforts to influence and control the media. “It’s right in front of us,” he said, adding that these actions need to be recognized.

He continued by accusing Republicans of trying to manipulate media platforms, saying, “It’s not just coincidences. It’s coordinated and dangerous. The GOP’s stance seems to dismiss the importance of free speech.”

ABC’s Decision to Suspend the Show

Disney, which owns ABC, confirmed that Kimmel’s show would be on hold indefinitely. Nexstar Media Group and the Sinclair Broadcasting Group announced they would replace Kimmel’s program with different content for the foreseeable future.

Some, including those in the media industry, have questioned Kimmel’s remarks as inappropriate or lacking sensitivity amidst critical national discourse. For instance, Kimmel has been accused of trying to link a leftist ideology to a suspect in a recent incident, which he defended, stating that relationships were reaffirmed in the legal indictment.

Reactions from Various Leaders

After Kimmel’s comments, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Kerr warned Disney to handle the matter appropriately, suggesting there could be legal paths the FCC might need to pursue. This warning came just as Nexstar and Sinclair decided to preempt Kimmel’s show.

Critics argue that the decision to remove Kimmel’s show was politically motivated, which they believe threatens freedom of expression. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker echoed Newsom’s sentiments, calling the action “undemocratic” and emphasizing that comedians shouldn’t be silenced by political figures unhappy with their commentary.

Pritzker stated, “A democratic society should not stifle comedians just because the president disagrees with them.” He urged all elected officials to denounce this behavior as an attack on free speech.

On the other side, former President Donald Trump took to social media to commend the suspension of Kimmel’s show, describing it as “great news for America.” He claimed Kimmel lacked talent and suggested the ratings supported that view.

ABC has been contacted for further comments regarding this situation.
