Cruz Pushes to Ban Iranian Officials from U.S. Entry

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is advocating for a ban on Iranian officials entering the United States in light of upcoming discussions at the UN General Assembly. This move comes as he introduced the Enforcement and Restrictions for Enforcement and Restrictions (SEVE) Act on Thursday.

The proposed act aims to prevent Iranian officials from attending the UN as representatives if they have received assistance or are appointed by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Alikhamenei. Cruz expressed strong sentiments about the Iranian government, stating, “The Iranian regime and the corrupt officials that run it are responsible for the murders, injuries, and inducements of thousands of Americans.” He stressed, “Ayatollah means that when he recites his death to America,” emphasizing the need for measures against the perceived threats from Iran.

Cruz handed out a notable warning, suggesting that any individual linked to the Ayatollah’s government is a potential risk to American security. “If you are part of the regime, you should not be allowed in the U.S.,” he asserted.

Several other Republican senators have jumped on board as co-sponsors, including Tom Cotton (Fla.), John Barrasso (Wyo.), Ashley Moody (Fla.), Rick Scott (Fla.), and Joni Ernst (Iowa). In the House, Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) is leading a companion bill.

Tenney added her thoughts, stating, “[Iran’s] President Masoud Pezeshkian, like his predecessor, is part of a regime that funds terrorism and brutalizes the Iranian people.” She insisted that officials of this government shouldn’t be allowed to enter the U.S. to spread propaganda.

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly commenced on September 9. The significant “High Level” meetings will begin on Monday in New York City, where discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and related sanctions are anticipated.

Both Pezeshkian and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakich are expected to participate in the upcoming UN meeting. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been considering travel restrictions for various foreign delegations, including those from Iran. Recently, new measures have limited movement outside New York City for some delegations.

Interestingly, a memo from the Internal State Department suggested that certain shopping trips, like those to Costco and Sam’s Club, may require prior permission from the State Department—an unusual but notable point of consideration.
