How ESPN will choose Molly Qerim's successor on 'First Take'

ESPN is implementing a tryout phase before choosing a new host for “First Take.”

According to Burke Magnus, the network’s content president, there will be a 30-45 day period with guest hosts, including Stephen A. Smith, following the resignation of Molly Qerim. It’s uncertain whether ESPN will opt for someone from within the company for the permanent role.

“I’m not sure if it will be someone internal,” Magnus mentioned. “The timing of everything was unexpected. Once Qerim’s departure was reported, it quickly became public. We were aware of the timeline since her contract ends at the year’s close; that, understandably, became our focus. So, in about 30-45 days, we should be able to assess the situation and make a decision,” he said.

Qerim, who has been with “First Take” since 2015, announced her exit after news broke that she would leave the network by year’s end.

Magnus noted that Qerim and ESPN were discussing roles beyond “First Take,” and that the network is keen on keeping her.

In her statement, Qerim reflected that the news “arrived quicker than I had anticipated, but not quite in the manner I wished.”

She expressed, “After much thought, I’ve decided it was time to wrap up this unforgettable chapter. Hosting this show has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Each morning, I shared the desk with some truly remarkable, passionate, and hilarious figures in sports.”

Qerim added her gratitude for the journey, highlighting the lifelong friendships and special memories she has made during her time on the show.

She closed with, “Thank you so much for welcoming me into your homes; it means the world to me.”

Magnus confirmed that Qerim will be moving on from “First Take,” stating that both parties “didn’t quite align” on her future role.

“Molly Qerim is fantastic—an amazing teammate and colleague,” Magnus said. “This situation had several layers. We wanted to have an updated conversation. It’s been a decade since we last did that. I’m not speaking for her, but I think she was looking for something different. Personally, I believe she desires a new challenge.”

As for now, Smith will continue hosting through the week leading into the weekend.
