Mayfield and Gardner-Johnson Exchange Words on the Field

Baker Mayfield isn’t someone who generally gets rattled, but CJ Gardner-Johnson is no stranger to vocal exchanges either.

“We won’t take the ST,” Mayfield remarked to reporters following an on-field confrontation with the Texans’ safety.

Gardner-Johnson, who secured a Super Bowl win with the Eagles last season, didn’t hold back in his response. He made a comment about “this cute but still ringless,” adding a bit of spice to the ongoing banter.

Gardner-Johnson’s reputation for smack talk isn’t new; he’s stirred up trouble before, notably taunting Chiefs star Travis Kelce after the Super Bowl and expressing his feelings when he was traded to Houston.

On Monday night, Mayfield led the Buccaneers during a close game, finishing with a touchdown that brought the score to 20-19.

During one play, he scrambled for a remarkable 15 yards, mixing in some choice words with Gardner-Johnson before he was finally tackled.

There was a moment when it looked like Mayfield had hurt himself, but instead, he seemed more curious about Gardner-Johnson’s condition.

This year, Mayfield has solidified his role as the Buccaneers’ quarterback. In 2024, he threw for 4,500 yards, notching 41 touchdowns against 16 interceptions.

Last season, he guided the Buccaneers to the playoffs, although they fell short in a wildcard match against the Commanders.

Looking ahead, the 2-0 Buccaneers are set to host the Jets this Sunday.
