Teen Arrested for May Shooting in the Bronx
Authorities reported that an 18-year-old suspect, Brandon Sullivan, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 57-year-old man from the Bronx. The incident occurred in May, and family members of the victim, Kevin Jennings, believe they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sullivan was taken into custody while attending a probation meeting. The NYPD’s violent crime task force linked him to the shooting that took place on May 18 in Fordham Heights, resulting in Jennings’ death and injuries to a 34-year-old woman.
He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police say Sullivan opened fire around 6:50 PM on East 188th Avenue, not far from Fordham University. Jennings suffered a fatal head injury, while the bystander, simply walking by, sustained a gunshot wound to her leg.
Both victims were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital; Jennings did not survive his injuries, while the woman is reportedly in stable condition.
Family members of Jennings emphasized that they believe he was not the intended target. A relative, who identified himself as Jamal but didn’t want to share his last name, spoke about the situation. He described Jennings as a man who was merely sitting in a bodega, eating and enjoying his day when the shooting occurred.
Jamal noted, “He was just relaxing, and now we can’t even go home.” He expressed concern over the rising violence, saying, “This is a serious problem happening everywhere.”
As of Thursday, officers had not determined the specific motivations behind the shooting.
Details about Sullivan’s previous probation case remain unclear.
