College volleyball protest ignites over issues surrounding transgender athletes

Protests Erupt Over Transgender Player During California Volleyball Game

At a recent college volleyball match in California, tensions boiled over as a group of protesters gathered to voice their concerns. This event followed a Title IX controversy involving a transgender player on one of the teams.

The matchup featured Santa Rosa Junior College against Sierra College in Rocklin. This took place weeks after several Santa Rosa players lodged complaints regarding the inclusion of biologically male athletes on their team. Sierra ultimately claimed victory in that game.

Among the protesters was Beth Bourne, a local advocate for female sports. She provided signs for students who attended, remarking that it was a significant moment—perhaps the first time college-level protests around this issue were witnessed.

Bourne mentioned experiencing firsthand the support from students during the game, saying, “It was heartening to see young people stepping up.” She elaborated on how this issue has crept into various sporting events where they, as activists, have participated.

Interestingly, male athletes from Sierra also joined the protest. Bourne recounted an instance where they handed a protest sign to a young male player during a timeout. His enthusiastic response made her feel hopeful, as he even asked to hold signs alongside them.

Fox News Digital sought comments from both Santa Rosa and Sierra College regarding the situation. Santa Rosa had previously issued a statement about the initial Title IX complaints.

The college highlighted its dedication to maintaining an inclusive environment and noted that it complies with regulations set by the California Community College Athletic Association. They also emphasized the importance of respecting student privacy and their commitment to addressing complaints seriously.

Two athletes from Santa Rosa, Madison Shaw and Gracie Shaw, shared their experiences regarding the alleged harm caused by a trans teammate. Madison claimed that a trans player had spiked a ball into her teammate’s face, resulting in a concussion. She expressed frustration over this and mentioned how it impacted her teammate’s performance while others on the team viewed the incident differently.

Gracie recounted her own experience. “I got hit by a spike from the trans athlete. It was surprising how hard it came at me, much more than I’d experienced with other players,” she explained, emphasizing the quicker pace and stronger impact.

The two along with teammate Briel Galli filed a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, claiming retaliation from school officials when they expressed concerns about the inclusion of male athletes.

Madison noted that they wanted to address this with the coaches and athletic directors but felt their voices were disregarded. “I was told I couldn’t explain my reasons to the team. They insisted on maintaining privacy for the male athletes,” she said.

California has seen growing debates around the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, particularly volleyball. The state’s Department of Education faces legal challenges over its policy allowing biological males to compete in female categories, raising questions at national levels.

Past controversies, including an investigation at the NCAA level involving a trans player and incidents at high school competitions, reflect the ongoing complexity of this issue in the realm of sports.
