Matt Petgrave Returns to Ice After Tragic Incident

Canadian hockey player Matt Petgrave is back on the ice, marking a significant moment for the Blackhawks’ ECHL affiliates. This is the first time since the unfortunate incident on October 28, 2023, when Petgrave was involved in the death of American hockey player Adam Johnson.

Sean Hallett, the CEO of Fuel, addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Petgrave’s return. He expressed that Petgrave should be allowed the chance to continue his hockey career. “Matt was part of a tragic event on the ice two years ago. No criminal charges were filed against him after the accident. After discussions with his coaches and teammates, we feel he deserves the opportunity to play again,” Hallett stated.

He added, “We appreciate the support from the community and are confident that Petgrave will be a positive impact on the team and the city.”

On October 18, 2023, Petgrave’s skate collided with Johnson’s neck during a game, leading to a fatal injury.

Following the incident, the Crown Prosecutor’s Office decided not to file charges, despite Petgrave initially being arrested for manslaughter stemming from this collision during a British Hockey League match.

There was considerable speculation online regarding whether Petgrave’s actions were intentional, particularly after footage of the clash circulated. However, both the league and Petgrave’s teammates believed it was an accident.
