Baltimore – Base Running Insights
Aaron Boone recently referred to Jose Caballero as a player capable of making things happen on the base paths, commenting that he “masses up” on the bases but can also “stop your breath” at times.
This observation came after a game where Caballero’s aggressive base running truly shone. Yet, during Thursday’s game, some of his potential weaknesses were exposed once again.
In a matchup with the Orioles, Caballero faced a tough situation for the second time in four games after a lead was a bit too ambitious. He was tagged out at first base in the second inning, following a hit from left-handed pitcher Kade Povich, during the Yankees’ commanding 7-0 win at Camden Yards. Earlier, on Monday night when playing against the Twins, Caballero hit a double but got caught trying to advance to third base.
“You have to accept some of that,” Boone mentioned. “When you’re running often and stealing bases, risks are part of the game, which can lead to a few outs here and there. You do your best to prepare and minimize those episodes.”
Amid his ongoing efforts, Caballero leads the majors with 48 stolen bases so far this season. Jazz Chisholm Jr. also contributed by stealing a base, marking his 200th career extra-base hit.
Earlier this season, Devin Williams had experienced some ups and downs, which affected his rhythm. However, the Yankees’ reliever seems to be finding his groove again, which is crucial as the team aims to stabilize their bullpen heading into October.
“He’s pitching with confidence,” Boone stated. “His mix is becoming less predictable now. He’s primarily a two-pitch guy, but his fastball looked good. It really adds something to his game, maintaining distance from hitters.”
In a solid performance, Paul Blackburn closed the game with two hitless innings.
As for the Orioles going into Thursday’s game, Boone clarified his view, saying, “I don’t see them as a last-place team. They’ve been playing well for a while now, which might not align with pre-season expectations. They’re a good team—a scary team, really—not at all reflective of being in last place.”
