Hindu-Americans criticize Zohran Mamdani for 'Hinduphobia'

Mamdani’s Controversial Rise in NYC Politics

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist running for mayor, has stirred up significant tensions within the Hindu community in New York. His criticisms of Hindu issues have brought forth discontent, particularly from groups who see his stance as driven by bias.

The New York Hindu community is voicing its concerns over Mamdani’s remarks, accusing him of playing a dangerous game that targets minority groups he disapproves of. His ascent to political prominence has, unfortunately, rekindled old sectarian issues that many believe should stay in the past.

Mamdani’s engagement with Indian political matters—drawing attention to his family’s heritage—has been seen as provocative. For instance, Jennifer Rajkumar, a fellow politician, labeled his remarks as indicative of “Hindu fascism.”

Back in 2020, Mamdani participated in a protest against a Hindu temple in Ayodhya, which also drew attention in Times Square.

Hindu Americans, including activists like Satya Dozapati, have been keen to halt Mamdani’s campaign, displaying aerial banners aimed at warning the public during the election season.

The Ayodhya temple is historically significant, as it was built on a site previously occupied by a mosque. In 2019, a court ruling allowed Hindus to reclaim the land for their religious practices.

Critics argue that Mamdani’s privileged background leaves him unaware of the historical sensitivities surrounding these debates, often seeing him as out of touch with the diverse fabric of New York.

Recently, Hindu leaders have urged action against Mamdani, claiming his statements contribute to anti-Hindu sentiment. Lakshmibandramdi, a professor, expressed disappointment, labeling Mamdani’s comments harmful to city unity.

Concerns over Mamdani’s views have escalated, particularly after he has made bold statements regarding high-profile figures like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being a “fascist.” Activists feel that such language is not constructive and only deepens divides.

Community members are scrutinizing his public appearances, noting that he failed to address vandalism against a statue of Gandhi in Queens, an incident he notably did not comment on.

Mamdani’s team responded by asserting that Hinduism is an important aspect of his identity, emphasizing their commitment to diversity and inclusion in New York.

As he camps for votes, Mamdani is drawing a cautionary parallel to places like London, where community tensions have escalated. His critics question how he could foster unity in such a diverse city amid his contentious rhetoric.

The complexities of these relationships are many, with the Hindu community feeling increasingly alienated and unheard in the political discourse. It remains to be seen how Mamdani’s candidacy will develop as these issues come to the forefront of New York’s political landscape.
