Disney’s Push to Bring Back Kimmel Amid Controversy
Disney is reportedly eager to get Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show back on air after a contentious monologue surrounding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The situation escalated quickly, leading to threats against staff and resulting in Kimmel’s temporary suspension.
Meetings between Kimmel and Disney executives, including CEO Bob Iger, are on the schedule for late Thursday as they navigate the fallout. There’s hope the show could return as soon as this Monday, though the timeline remains uncertain.
On Wednesday, during “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Kimmel criticized Republicans for allegedly exploiting Kirk’s death for political gain. This was preceded by Kimmel’s controversial comments suggesting that Kirk’s accused murderer, Tyler Robinson, was associated with certain extremist groups.
FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr voiced concerns, indicating ABC’s broadcast license might be up for review. Some affiliates, including Sinclair and Nexstar, threatened to pull their support for the show.
Insiders revealed that Disney is also focused on security measures, with reports of personal information being leaked online. Walden, a co-chair at Disney, had expressed worries that Kimmel’s approach might worsen the already tense situation.
The suspension has drawn ire from many in Hollywood. Former late-night host David Letterman criticized Disney for what he views as appeasement to authoritarian tactics. Creator Damon Lindelof also shared his discontent with Kimmel’s suspension, indicating a disconnect between creative freedom and company policies.
Actor and producer unions have condemned the decision, fearing it may lead to self-censorship among comedians.
Kimmel has been at the helm of his ABC show since 2003 and recently planned a live broadcast in Brooklyn. Even if the program faces financial challenges, it maintains a dedicated audience, positioned as one of Disney’s last anchors in late-night programming as CBS gears up to conclude its own offerings in 2026.
In response, Kimmel embraced the confusion surrounding the situation to take aim at both the Trump administration and fellow late-night hosts. Meanwhile, certain advertisers are growing restless, with some considering refunds for commercials after the show’s abrupt suspension.
Amid ongoing discussions, it appears Kimmel may not be required to publicly apologize, and he currently has no intentions to do so. Security at the El Capitan Entertainment Centre in Hollywood, where Kimmel tapes, has notably increased since the controversy erupted. The environment feels unsettling, with many on staff expressing concerns about the climate in which they operate.
Legal experts are cautioning ABC about the potential ramifications of regulatory pressures, noting that networks often adjust their strategies in response to external influences. As of now, the return of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” remains uncertain, with no clear decisions made as the situation develops.
