On Thursday, members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) protested outside Disney/ABC studios following the suspension of late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
This protest came after the WGA expressed disapproval of the suspension. A video circulated showing writers picketing outside the studio.
Earlier this week, it was reported that ABC, Disney, and broadcasting affiliate Nexstar decided to pull Jimmy Kimmel “from all stations” after his remarks implying that the assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk might have ties to MAGA, despite evidence pointing to left-leaning influences. Nexstar labeled Kimmel’s comments as “aggressive and insensitive,” emphasizing a desire to foster respectful dialogue.
Shortly after the announcement of his suspension, Sinclair Vice Chairman Jason Smith criticized Kimmel’s comments as being “inappropriate and deeply insensitive.”
“Kimmel’s comments were inappropriate and deeply insensitive during such a crucial time for our country,” Smith stated. He added that the broadcaster holds a responsibility to promote educational and respectful dialogue in the community. Smith expressed gratitude for Carr’s earlier remarks, stating that the situation highlights the necessity for the FCC to address the control exerted by major national networks over local broadcasters.
Sinclair also announced that an ABC station will broadcast a special in memory of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during the time slot of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
The WGA deemed the suspension as an infringement on free speech.
“The right to express ourselves and to oppose one another, even to obstruct, is central to what it means to be free. This should never be denied, whether through violence, misuse of government power, or corporate conduct,” the union stated.
