Cliff Kingsbury’s Enthusiasm for Commanders’ Quarterback Room
Cliff Kingsbury seems quite pleased with the dynamics in the Commanders’ quarterback room this season, even jokingly suggesting approval for a figurative “marriage” of sorts. It’s clear he’s enjoying the environment, which notably includes practice squad quarterback Sam Hartman.
“He looks good,” Kingsbury mentioned during a press conference on Thursday. Hartman, who’s had an interesting journey through college at Wake Forest and Notre Dame, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Commanders. Although he hasn’t seen any action in NFL games, he’s been a familiar face, moving through various contracts with Washington over the past couple of seasons.
This year, Hartman is competing alongside Jaden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, and Josh Johnson in the quarterback room.
When asked about the camaraderie within this group, Kingsbury emphasized the role of quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard, praising him for fostering a strong bond. He also mentioned the positive influence of assistant quarterbacks coach David Bloff, saying, “More than anything, they are incredible people and hardworking experts. It’s just a pleasure to be around them day in and day out.”
This unit has been pivotal for Kingsbury, especially after his tenure with the Cardinals ended in 2022. With the Commanders, they ranked fifth in the league for points per game (28.5) and averaged 369.6 yards, making a notable run to the NFC Championship game against the Eagles.
As for Hartman, he’s still waiting for that first official snap in the NFL. However, he did participate in all three preseason games, completing 25 out of 46 passes for 207 yards and recording four interceptions.
Looking ahead, adjustments are necessary following a knee sprain sustained by Daniels during practice, which has sidelined him. As the team prepares for their next match, Mariota, the second overall pick from 2015, is set to take the start.
Kingsbury spoke highly of Mariota’s professionalism and work ethic, saying, “Whenever he’s asked about playing or practicing, he’s been incredible. He approaches things like a true professional, leading the team even without being a starter. It speaks volumes about his character.”
