Healthcare Debate in Congress

Representative Rosa Delauro from Connecticut made headlines after she passionately addressed her Republican colleagues on the House floor regarding a continuing resolution (CR) bill, which she argued would negatively impact health care.

The House approved a Republican-crafted CR to fund government activities through November 21st, allowing time for further discussions about government funding for the rest of fiscal year 2026.

Delauro criticized the approach taken by Republicans, stating, “[Trump] told Republicans he was continuing to pass resolutions and stuffing Democrats’ throats. He aims to push us towards a government shutdown. This House has chosen a partisan path. Democrats want to engage in dialogue about reopening the government. The core issue at hand is crucial, and yes, it pertains to health care. We will not endorse a partisan Republican bill that undermines health care for Americans.”

Lawmakers later suggested that Republicans had made significant cuts to Medicaid affecting 15 million Americans as part of a previous bill passed in July. This legislation sought to reform Medicaid expenditures, mandating that capable adult recipients complete at least 80 hours of work per month to retain their benefits.

Delauro continued, emphasizing the potential negative consequences of the bill, claiming, “It’s really a mistake. Page 91 of this continuous solution somehow deals with healthcare extension, whether it’s for veterans or others. The healthcare coverage involved is clear-cut, and communities will be aware of the implications.”

Connecticut’s lawmakers expressed their commitment to keeping the government operational, urging their peers to vote against proposals that could lead to a shutdown.

On a related note, Trump publicly encouraged support for the legislation via a post. Notably, Kentucky’s Thomas Massey and Indiana’s Victoria Spartz opposed the measure, while Maine’s Democrat Rep. Jared Golden was the sole party member to endorse it.
