Late-Night Hosts React to Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension
Recently, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel addressed his ongoing suspension from the show he hosts on Disney. His program, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has been pulled off the air indefinitely after an individual involved in a violent incident claimed allegiance to President Trump.
Kimmel expressed his thoughts on the situation, suggesting a narrative battle regarding the perpetrator, referring to attempts to depict him as disconnected from extremist groups. He remarked, “Americans are free to express what we want.”
Following the suspension announcement, Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcasting decided to remove Kimmel’s show from their lineup, prompting ABC to halt production altogether.
On Thursday night, other late-night hosts chimed in with their responses to Kimmel’s situation, resulting in what many described as a somewhat awkward display of either teamwork or mere alignment in thought.
Jon Stewart opened his show “The Daily Show” at 11 PM ET by commenting humorously on how some might perceive the Trump administration as “using blackmail” for power consolidation. He added, “I think it’s great, not me,” which left some in the audience unsure of how to react.
Stewart featured a diverse array of seven guests in a somewhat synchronized response, with all of them affirming, “Of course, John. Americans can freely express what we want.”
Shortly after, Jimmy Fallon took to the stage on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” also addressing Kimmel’s predicament. In his opening monologue, Fallon expressed concern that “many people are worried that we won’t keep saying what we want to say or that we’ll be censored.” He reassured his audience that he would cover topics regarding the President’s trip to the UK just as before.
As part of his routine, Fallon included a voiceover connected to Trump, claiming, “President Trump has just concluded his three-day trip to the UK,” followed by an exaggerated compliment about his looks.
If viewers weren’t worn out yet, they could tune in to Seth Myers later that evening, where he also echoed similar sentiments. At 12:35 AM on “Late Night with Seth Myers,” he remarked on the current administration’s “crackdown on freedom of speech.” He then switched gears, oddly complimenting Trump, describing him as “visionary.”
Myers further deflected any criticism, claiming, “If you’ve ever seen me say anything negative about him, it’s just AI.”
The similarity among the responses from the three shows became apparent as they unfolded, with Stewart’s remarks being reported by Fallon shortly after, and then echoed by Myers. The formulaic nature of their commentary seemed especially pronounced.
Additionally, Myers’ episode featured a drag queen, known as “Jinkx Monsoon,” with Myers persistently referring to the performer in a way that drew laughter but also left some baffled, given the context.
