Memorial for Charlie Kirk, Iryna Zarutska Attends U.S. Embassy in Moscow

A Memorial for Charlie Kirk in Moscow

This week, Russian state media reported the emergence of a small memorial shrine outside the US embassy in Moscow, dedicated to Charlie Kirk, a conservative American commentator who was recently assassinated during a public lecture, along with Irina Zaltzka, a Ukrainian immigrant who was killed in North Carolina.

As people walked past, many reportedly contributed to the shrine by leaving flowers and candles. The origin of the memorial remains unclear, though reports from major Russian news outlets like Tass and Ria Novosti suggest that there hasn’t been a push from the government to dismantle it. Tass noted that an unidentified person had placed photos, messages, and various items at the site on Wednesday.

Messages at the memorial included praise for Kirk, describing him as “Christian, conservative, and human.” One message allegedly contained a quote attributed to Kirk regarding Russia’s claims about Crimea, though the specifics of when or how he made that statement were not disclosed.

Kirk had been vocal in his criticisms of President Joe Biden’s substantial spending on Ukrainian forces and was firmly against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, asserting that the conflict should not involve the United States. During a public university event earlier this year, he addressed questions about Ukraine and President Zelensky.

Kirk dismissed the notion that Russia had been provoked into invading Ukraine. “I think that’s an overreach. Invading a sovereign country is morally unacceptable in my eyes,” he added. “If you want to be part of Russia in eastern Ukraine, that’s one thing, but you shouldn’t bomb civilians and drive people away. That’s just wrong.”

As the founder of Turning Point USA, a political organization aimed at empowering young conservatives on university campuses, Kirk frequently hosted discussions and debates, encouraging students—especially those with left-leaning views—to challenge their perspectives. He was a strong advocate for traditional values, including Christianity and marriage, and is survived by his wife and two children at the age of 31.

Reports allege that the male shooter, identified as a law enforcement officer, targeted Kirk in the neck during an appearance at Utah Valley University on September 10 while he was discussing violence amongst transgender individuals. Investigations suggest that the assailant may identify as transgender.

Although Kirk focused on American conservativism, he had a keen interest in international matters, leading to memorials similar to the one in Moscow popping up at US embassies around the globe. Across various nations, conservatives have organized candlelight vigils and prayer sessions in his memory.

In Seoul, for example, several memorials surfaced, with one notable location being the historic Sungnyemun Gate. Just before his death, Kirk had visited a statue of General Douglas MacArthur, having traveled to South Korea earlier in September to engage with young conservatives following political shifts there.

Messages from mourners expressed gratitude and highlighted Kirk’s inspirational role, noting, “God’s hand will help you and your family. Your voice resonates with the world and will inspire many young, conservative patriots.” Similar gatherings took place in cities like Madrid, where young conservatives gathered in the vicinity of the American embassy in memory of Kirk.

Kirk’s influence extended to discussions around Latin America, where he received commendations from various conservative figures, including Argentina’s libertarian president Javier Milei. Milei remarked on Kirk’s tragic assassination amidst a climate of political violence from the left, calling it a global loss of an extraordinary individual.

Moreover, gatherings of mourners were reported in locations like Sydney, Berlin, and Pretoria.

A range of memorial services, including Kirk’s funeral, are slated for this weekend across the United States.
