According to court documents filed on Friday, the man who attempted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 now goes by the name Sophie Rosuke and uses female pronouns. Nicholas Rosuke, who is due to be sentenced next month, has been identified in legal documents as using this name, although his legal name remains Nicholas.
The court’s filing, which is a standard procedure before sentencing, indicated that the name “Sophia” would be used in reference to him. A footnote clarified that for the sake of respect, Rosuke should be referred to as “Sophie” with feminine pronouns.
It remains unclear if Rosuke is receiving treatment related to gender transition. An inquiry for comment was made to Rosuke’s defense team.
On June 8, 2022, Rosuke approached Kavanaugh’s residence with firearms, ammunition, knives, and tactical gear. He later called 911, reportedly after a conversation with his sister, while being outside the Justice’s home.
This incident occurred just weeks before the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which ignited protests both at the court and at the homes of conservative justices.
The Department of Justice is seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Rosuke, with prosecutors commenting on his long-standing mental health problems, which have included thoughts of violently harming family members. The specifics of his treatment were not disclosed.
While there has been discussion concerning Rosuke’s gender identity and its potential implications, the issues surrounding gun ownership and mental health are still being examined. Notably, investigations are ongoing regarding other individuals involved in political violence.
The Bureau of Prisons has stated that they cannot disclose information about Rosuke’s treatment or confinement conditions, citing privacy and security concerns.
