Insights from Kamala Harris’ Upcoming Book
In her forthcoming book, titled “107 Days,” Kamala Harris reflects on a pivotal moment during her campaign when then-President Joe Biden reached out to her just before her debate with Donald Trump. This call, she notes, came while she was preparing for a crucial debate that would shape her political future.
Reportedly, Biden, sitting in a hotel room, wished her luck but also seemed to have his own concerns on his mind. He mentioned something about a group of influential figures in Philadelphia, asking if Harris recognized a few related to the matter, which she didn’t.
Straining Relations
Harris expresses frustration in her book regarding the lack of support from Biden’s communication team and inner circle. In one candid excerpt, she wrote about a past debate performance that left her feeling “angry and disappointed.” She felt that Biden’s pre-debate call was more focused on his own issues rather than offering support at a critical juncture.
Biden had apparently mentioned that a close associate was unwilling to back her due to something she had said. This, I think, may have created additional tension, making Harris feel somewhat isolated just before facing Trump. It’s interesting how those personal dynamics can play such an important role in the bigger picture of a campaign.
Looking Forward
While Harris managed to maintain a supportive façade during the campaign, her book offers a window into the underlying strains in her relationship with Biden. Scheduled for release on September 23, it piques curiosity about the ongoing political landscape as we approach the 2024 election.
In another particularly revealing section, she comments on Biden and Jill’s decisions during the campaign, labeling them “reckless” instead of, say, “great,” which paints a rather different picture of the behind-the-scenes dynamics than what was publicly presented.
Moreover, Harris discusses the selection process for potential running mates, noting that Transportation Director Pete Buttigieg was her initial choice over Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. However, with the campaign’s aspirations of representing diverse demographics, including Black women and those with varied backgrounds, she deemed it a considerable risk.
Overall, Harris’ narrative hints at a more complex relationship with Biden than what might be apparent on the surface, raising questions about what lies ahead in their tenure and the broader implications for the Democratic Party.
