WNBA Star Caitlin Clark Fined for Instagram Comment
Caitlin Clark, a notable player in the WNBA, has reportedly been fined $200 by the league due to a comment she made on Instagram regarding the referees, despite not having played in a game for months.
In her post on X, Clark shared a screenshot from a fan account celebrating the Indiana Fever’s recent playoff win against the Atlanta Dream. The post included the phrase “Refs Couldn’t Stop Us.” Clark humorously remarked, “I was fined $200 for this laugh,” along with her intention to share the screenshot again. She added a playful note about the excitement surrounding the upcoming game.
Teammate Sophie Cunningham humorously responded to Clark’s post, suggesting that a fundraiser be started to help cover the fine. “It’s really going to break the bank for her. Let’s start GoFundMe now!” Cunningham quipped.
Clark’s salary for the 2025 season was $78,066, and it seems she has plenty of support from fans and fellow players, even after both she and Cunningham faced season-ending injuries earlier this year.
Even though they are on the sidelines during the playoffs, Clark and Cunningham continue to grab attention, especially concerning officiating. In one of the Fever’s recent games against the Dream, both players were seen vocally expressing their discontent with the officiating by gesturing towards the referees after a call that didn’t go their way. Their reactions quickly caught the attention of fans on social media.
Clark’s relationship with WNBA referees has been a topic of discussion since her entry into the league in 2024. Friends and colleagues have noted that she often feels unfairly treated by officials. Back in June, Cunningham even called out referees after a physical altercation occurred while protecting Clark during a game against the Connecticut Sun.
“It was just part of the game. I think refs had a lot to do with it. Their track record doesn’t protect star players in the league,” Cunningham stated, expressing her commitment to protecting her teammates.
Clark’s brother also weighed in, suggesting that the issue of officiating could be linked to her injury and hinting at deeper problems with how players are treated. “Don’t get it wrong, this is on the refs,” he remarked, though he later deleted the comment.
Cunningham’s criticisms have echoed throughout the season, particularly after incidents involving Clark. “I thought she was fouled. The disrespect for our team is unacceptable,” Fever coach Stephanie White commented following a controversial no-call against Clark.
Clark herself has faced disciplinary actions this season, which included receiving a technical foul that resulted in a suspension. Reflecting on her penalties, she admitted to moments of frustration during games, suggesting that her emotional responses may have played a role in the fouls. However, she also questioned the consistency of how such situations are handled.
Currently, Clark is quite vocal about her recent fine, seemingly taking it in stride and using it as a talking point on social media.
