On Saturday, a controversial incident involving a Tennessee kicker occurred during a convincing 56-24 win against Alabama Bylamingham.
Max Gilbert, the kicker for Tennessee, celebrated after successfully making an extra point late in the first quarter when safety Syrad Bryant of the Blazers seemed to intentionally stomp on his foot as the players were leaving the field.
Bryant, a senior who transferred from Georgia Tech, faced anger from Gilbert’s teammates who rushed to his defense.
This rough play resulted in officials throwing multiple penalty flags, awarding Bryant a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
While it’s uncertain what prompted Bryant’s action, it could have stemmed from the mounting frustration as Gilbert’s successful kicks widened the Volunteers’ lead to 21 points.
In addition to this incident, Alabama Bylamingham’s cornerback Donald Lee was ejected earlier in the game for targeting a punt.
Regarding Bryant’s actions, UAB coach Trent Dilfer expressed his dissatisfaction, saying, “I’ve seen a video on Instagram. I’m not satisfied. I want to get a full video of it. He’s being disciplined for it.”
The game, which exceeded expectations, showcased Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar throwing for 218 yards, along with three touchdowns and one interception, leading the 15th-ranked Volunteers.
After the game, Aguilar mentioned, “I’m still learning how to play faster. It was a big adjustment for me. We’re still growing (as an offense). We can get better.”
Notably, Aguilar has now thrown for at least 200 yards in all 28 of his NCAA starts, marking the longest active streak in FBS.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel commented positively on Aguilar’s demeanor, saying, “What I like about him is whether it’s a good play or a bad play, he maintains the same attitude on the sidelines and as he approaches the next play. He plays smart football.”
